New Compression Socks and How I Dealt With My Plantar Fasciitis

Now that I've been running regularly I've decided to add shopping to make it even more enjoyable and to keep me interested in it.  My newest obsession are compression socks.  I love compression socks!  There's something so comforting about that pressure and slight squeeze.  I don't use them while running because I don't really believe they do anything during a run, but I use them after my long runs.  I already had a pair of CEP socks which are awesome but the foot is a little bit for my size (which is based on calf circumference - yes I have huge calves) and they are dark so they show a ton of pug fur.  And for some reason these socks trap pug fur like crazy!  The hairs get woven into the threads and are impossible to get out!

Anyways, I loved my CEP socks and wanted more, but dang those CEP socks are expensive.  Well, I saw a discount code on Skinny Runner's blog that's $20 off and free shipping  for Pro Compression socks (post here) and so I decided to give this brand a try since the discount was too good!

These socks are pretty nice!  I got the light blue and the light blue argyle (so cute!).  These were much easier to put on than CEP but the compression is less strong than CEP.  They are also thinner than CEP which will be nice during the warmer months or if you want to run with them.  And the foot in these socks fits me way better than CEP.  If I were to ever try running in compression socks, I'd probably  use these, but for hard core recovery, I like CEP better.  If only the foot fit better!  But, with the discount you can get on Pro Compression socks until the end of April, the deal is too good to let it pass by.  These are pretty good socks and so definitely take advantage of the discount!  I tried to get my pug nearby to help model the socks but she wouldn't participate and since I was sore and tired and not going to move I used her "friend."
I did try my best to reach over to her, all while not getting up from the couch.
She was a bit confused as to why I was bothering her.
Part of the reason why I started trying out compression socks is because I used to have major calf and Achilles issues.  So I figured anything that might help I should give it a try even though I haven't been having any issues since I stopped using my Brooks Trance sneakers.  I had really bad Achilles issues several years ago when I was studying for the bar but I had a whole host of issues from sitting on my butt so long studying and then sporadically pushing myself too hard in random runs.

But another issue I dealt with at the end of 2011 when I started running again was a bad flare up of plantar fasciitis.  I started running again in August 2011 and was increasing my mileage and speed pretty quickly at the same time (big mistake).  By the time I did a 6 mile run around the Mall in December I noticed a nagging slight pain in my left heel.  I just assumed it was a soreness that would pass in a couple days but it didn't.  Instead it got worse and weird.  It would disappear during my runs for the most part, but would be the worst in the mornings or after long periods of sitting.

After some Dr. Google sessions and a chat with my runner sister, I realized I had plantar fasciitis.  Argh!  Instead of tempting fate, I decided to take a conservative approach and stopped running for a few weeks.  After several weeks of dealing with my pf, and a weird case of traveling pf (it switched over to my right foot), I finally am heel pain free (knock on wood).  What worked best for me was the following:

(1) Most important was REST.  Running is high impact, so once you have a pf flare-up, it's best to avoid any pounding on your feet.  I used the bike for exercise during those weeks off.

(2) Ice rolling.  My brother-in-law who gets pf sometimes will use frozen golf balls.  I used a frozen water bottle.  I would roll each foot for a couple minutes a couple times a day.  And once I resumed running I would roll my feet after a run just to be safe.

(3) Wearing slippers around the house.  I am a barefoot person.  Not running-wise, just everyday living.  I grew up in a Korean home and we never wore shoes in the house.  Just the idea of wearing socks or shoes makes my toes twinkle with anxiety.  But during my pf flare-up, I wore cushioned slippers around the house and more cushioned shoes outside.

(4) When you start running again, increase mileage or speed, very slowly.  I think I got pf because I was increasing my speed and mileage both too quickly.  My body fights running every step of the way (e.g., my feet, my calves, my overheating issues) so I have to take it slowly.  And I still roll my feet after my runs but instead of doing it with a frozen water bottle I use a nubby massage ball.  I love it - it rejuvenates my tired feet!  I don't know if it helps with pf but it seems to be helping so far.  I do keep a frozen water bottle in the fridge just in case.

These are things that worked for me, but everybody is different and feet can be tricky.  So please note that this is just meant to be anecdotal and is not a substitute for any real medical advice.

It sucks dealing with pf, but now I'm aware of it and am a more careful runner as a result of it.  Ok enough running talk, now here's a pic of my pug:
Look at her dancing for a baby carrot!  Oh and right next to my Brooks Green Silence shoes!  Full circle!  I love when I tie up a post like that even if it was by accident!

First Birchbox!

So under the persuasion of my friend, Fritillaria, I decided to give Birchbox a try.  When she first described this to me I thought "Genius!"  Birchbox is a company that for $10/month will send you a monthly package with various samples, tailored for you based on a questionnaire you fill out when you join.  If you like a sample, you can buy the product through Birchbox's website.  I waste so much money on products that I end up not liking or using so I thought it would be a good idea to give this a try.  And I might discover something new and awesome along the way!

So after an annoyingly long wait list, I finally was able to sign up and got my first box in April.
This box had the following products:
-  Befine exfoliating cleanser packets
-  Befine daily moisturizer with spf 15
-  Showstoppers designer fashion tape
-  Juicy Couture perfume sample - Viva La Juicy
-  Color Club neon nail polish
-  June Jacobs perfect pumpkin enzyme polish

I'm excited to try out the Befine products and the exfoliator but I was disappointed with the nail polish, the Juicy Couture perfume (really?!  Juicy Couture perfume?), and the fashion tape (since I dress like a prudish bum, fashion tape is never needed).  So I'll give Birchbox a few more months and see how it goes.  If the bad outweighs the good then I'll quit.  My friend Fritillaria was unhappy with her box (post here) and I must admit she got a bad one.  It seems like the quality of boxes varies widely.  She didn't fill out the questionnaire so that might be the reason for her box, but even if she didn't her box should still be better.  So here's hoping May will be better.  But if not, there are a lot of companies that do a similar service that I totally didn't know about until Fritillaria introduced me to them.  How did I not know about these?!

New Sofa and Social Media Overload!

I finally got a new sofa - yippee!  My old one wasn't that old but it was the worst sofa ever!  I shake my fist at it!  I was so excited for it at first, a light green three seater sleeper sofa with a chaise.  Unfortunately the cushions must've been made out of the cheapest material ever because the cushions broke down so fast and the cover caught every piece of hair on it and showed even water stains (not good for a clumsy person and a licky pug).  After a few months, my couch looked busted and gross and was so uncomfortable to sit in.  It hurt my hips sometimes if I sat too long in it.  So on a random surprise visit to Ikea I made the plunge and got a new sofa!  It arrived super fast and I had to get rid of my old one which was all stressful.  I don't deal well with change and can only handle doing one big activity at a time.

Sunny doesn't like change either.
She was gated while we got rid of the old sofa.  She was not pleased.

Then we had to sit on the floor for a few days before my new sofa arrived.  At first we were fine with it but after a few days we both longed for a cushy seat.
And then it arrived!  Of course because it's Ikea there was some assembly required.  I was surprised though, I thought their sofas came ready to go?  I had to put in the footers and that middle round thing.  But when it came time to move the sofa into position, Sunny had found a comfy spot.
So after a few minutes of lounging in the worst spot ever, Sunny finally moved and I got my new sofa into position.  Isn't it purty?
It's 100x more comfy than my last couch - I love it!  And after Sunny jumps off my couch I just sweep my hand across it to get rid of her hair.  AWESOME.  Swoop!  Swoop!  Hair is gone!
I considered shelling out a lot for a fancy nice leather couch but when I was in Ikea I was surprised by the quality of the sofas there and the price just can't be beat.  And now I can spend the money I saved on treats for my spoiled pug.  She REALLY loves the new sofa now.
She likes to enjoy it with her "friends."
Oh and I also got some new bath mats there, which Sunny also has been enjoying.  Sheesh, she sure is making herself comfy there!
I've been a little lazy with posts recently because I've been busy setting up other social media stuff.  Dang, why are there so many different kinds?  Anyways, I now have a Facebook page (Bah Humpug link here) and a Twitter account (I'm on there as Funaek).  Oh, and I don't know if I posted this a while back but I also have a Tumblr account (Bah Humpug Tumblr) where I basically just reblog photos of pugs.  I can't get enough of them!

Time to do my other posts...Oh and my weird and funny friend has started a new blog about the random things she buys (Why Did You Buy That).  She keeps reminding me to do a post on my Birchbox package, so that will come next!

Happy Easter and Pug Pics

First thing's first...

happy easter!
that's a drawing i did for my other blog bah humpug but i wanted to do something easter-y here too.

on another note, i was trying to clean my keyboard yesterday and in my overzealousness i kinda broke my left shift key.  argh.  sometimes i just don't know when to stop and i make things worse.  so my caps may come and go for a bit until i figure out how to fix it.  yes i have a right shift key but i never use it and it's hard to remember it's there!  Right Shift Key Feels Unnatural (but it works).

i don't have much else for this post other than some pug photos.  and really, do i need anything more than that??

my pug likes to live dangerously!  She's allowed to go in the pet free area, but just can't do her business there.  she loooooves sniffing that area right by the sign post.  So many times i've thought it would make a great photo and luckily i had my trusty lil phone with me.
this is what my pug looks like when i try to get her attention for a photo by pretending i have a treat.  i can't get a normal photo of her looking at the camera because she's either looking away and moving her head around or she has this glassy-eyed crazy stare when i hold (or pretend to hold) a treat in my hand.  i still loves it.
i gave my pug a bath today and man that was an ordeal for both of us.  i do a full service bath, and if you're a pug owner you'll know what i mean.  it ain't pretty.  but now she smells so good!  unfortunately she's pissed at me and is shedding like crazy.  after a bath, requisite treats, and subsequent 15 minutes of stink eye at me, sunny likes to pass out into a deep deep sleep.  so sleepy!
but let's air out your ears a bit (hehe).

Shhhhhhh.....don't speak.  let's nap!
And so she does.

Pug (of course), Cookies, More Running Shoes, Essie's No More Film, and Awesome Kites

First thing's first.  My pug:
She is a super licky pug.  I don't like her licking my feet, but I prefer it to her licking my face.  So I allow it.  How perfect is it that I captured this moment right when her lil tongue is at its biggest?
So regal.
A few weeks ago I was craving my peanut butter/oatmeal/chocolate chip cookies and I had no butter.  So lesson learned - next week I stocked up on butter for any future cravings.  And tada, I was craving the cookies again the following weekend and I had all the ingredients!  I ate like 6 of these straight out of the oven.
I could've gotten a better picture of the inside but after I took this I promptly started stuffing my face with cookies and so it's hard to take pictures with chocolate covered fingers.
I tried yet another pair of running shoes, Saucony's Mirage.
Yes these are horrifically white but because the color isn't so cute I got them for suuuuuuper cheap.  These are the lightest shoes I've ever tried.  Light as a feather!  Buuuut, these have horribly large, bulky tongues that slide and bunch up.  By mid-run the tongues had slid completely to the side, bunched towards my toes and was pressing on that nerve that causes my right foot to go numb.  So disappointed.  If I could fix the tongue I'd be happy.  This has to be the worst tongue I've ever had in a running shoe though.  I'm pretty surprised at the poor construction for this shoe considering it's normal selling price.  It almost felt a little cheap on my foot.  Part of it is the light minimal material, but that tongue felt poorly built and sewed in.  Ugh.  So the search continues.  Until then, I bought another pair of backup Brooks Green Silence.

Below is a slightly blurry pic of my nails for the week - Essie's No More Film.  This is one of those extremely rare one coaters.  Yup, complete opacity with one coat!  This is a base coat, one coat of polish, and a top coat.  It started to chip 4 days later though so if you want it to be more durable maybe add on another coat just to be safe.
One windy spring day I saw a bunch of kites around the mall near Washington Monument.  I saw the most awesome kite EVER.  It's a giant kite shaped like a squid and as the wind moves the tentacles it looks like it's floating in the sea!  I wish everyone could've seen this because it was super awesome party.

Let's Talk About Books

So you may have noticed a few links to the left of my other blogs.  One of which is an active one where I post pug illustrations (I try to do non-pug drawings, but pugs just tumble out of my pen so I go with what works).  The other two were these book blogs that I started a year ago and had grand plans for, which are now totally inactive.  I feel so bad!  But reviewing books in the level of detail I wanted to took too much time that I just didn't have, especially once I started my illustration blog.  So instead I decided to do a post here of the books I've read in the past couple years, with a very simple rating system:

  • Awesome [A] - My top rating.  I loved it and you might too!
  • Pretty good [P] - Most books fall in this category.  Enjoyable reads but nothing outstanding or memorable.
  • Meh [M] - Ok.  A solid C/D grade.
  • Don't waste your time [D] - This was a waste of my time and brain space.  Hated it.
  • Hmm, can't remember [H] - Because I read a lot, sometimes I just forget books.  Could've been good or bad, but not awesome because I would remember an awesome book.

Now quick disclaimer: I have pretty eclectic tastes in books but because I view reading as a form of entertainment and escape I read a lot of YA/children's.  I generally don't read chick lit, shopoholic-y, Steven King, Tom Grisham, Charlaine Harris, Jason Bourne books.  And the ratings below are simply my view of the books.  My friends/family disagree with a lot of them, and I'm sure you will too.  I tried to group these together in fairly specific categories so if you're looking for like books you can check out some of the other books in the same category.  And if you have any questions on any of these just leave a comment!

She says "woof."
